On Sunday we headed to our favorite OBI and bought some cherry laurel bushes to plant in the front two planters.  First we dug the holes.

Then we planted the bushes.

Kimberly hid a bit behind the bushes.

And then she watered them.

Now that’s much better, the front is green and now we can sit back and wait for the grass to catch up.

Green!!  It’s all  in a weekend’s work.  On Saturday we decided it was time to plant some grass so after Jach came to deliver the roller, even on a holiday he was willing to bring it over to us, we started raking the yard.  Unfortunately, the trees in the back had it in for us and dropped as many leaves as we were able to rake up but we weren’t discouraged by it and kept on raking.

driveway with the roller raking

After we raked as much as we could we leveled out the soil with rakes and the roller.  Once everything was good and even, we spread out the fertilizer and then the grass seed.

seeding

We then raked it all again to get the seed to work into the soil.  Then it was time to roll it all iover again.

rolling

Of course after 8 hours of working on the yard the last thing we did was water the seed.

watering

Now for it all to grow!  Notice the leaves all over the yard? Well, now those seeds are warm under a blanket of leaves.  Now to get some bushes for the front.

Monday: On Monday the men prepared the driveway and brought the existing underground pipes for sewage and water to the right level.

Tuesday: They had a few last things to finish before laying the stones on Tuesday. Before we left for work they were still preparing the driveway and by the time we got home the driveway was finished.

Wednesday: On Wednesday all was quiet on the housefront and the coffee I had made and left by the front door remained untouched.

Thursday: On Thursday they worked on Sabine and Michael’s driveway.

Friday: Friday was the day they finally did the last bits of work on our driveway and the filled in the rest of the soil around the house and in the front.  They also did the remaining touches to our water pump for our rain water tank and then cleaned up the yard of any last hints of work that had been done there.  It’s amazing to think a month ago this was all dirt.

On Wednesday the men were here bright and early at 7 am to start again.  Now the front has an edge and you can see where my front bushes will go.  Now to figure out what kind of bushes should go there.

Thursday front

Yet another decision is what kind of stones to use for the edging.  How about granite pieces?

Thursday was yet another busy day.

Finally on Friday they had finished the front step and the driveway, at least where we park the car.

Alexander Jach our landscaper has only been working a week on our yard and it looks great already.  At least we all think so.

Monday: The big thing that changed was his sign and the fact that the tree stumps that we’ve had in the back yard since we bought the lot are now gone.  He also dug out around the window wells.  We had good intentions on Sunday to move all our flowers and grill to the neighbors’ yard, but it wouldn’t stop raining the whole day so everything was still there on Monday.

Tuesday: The dry well is in place and connected to the rainwater pipe.  Three cement rings for the second dry well were waiting ready to be placed on the other side of the house.  One of four window wells was raised and we managed to bring the flowers and garden junk over to Sabine and Michael’s yard for storage until we’re finished.

Wednesday: The last 3 window wells were raised, the 5000 liter rainwater tank was delivered and our stones for the driveway are waiting patiently to be placed in position.

Thursday: As they tried to dig a hole for the water tank, the first problems arose.  They hit a thick cable which no one could identify.  After a complete dig stop, to make sure no electricity was running through it, it turned out to be just a part of the cable used when they were building.  It’s now out and gone.

After digging the ditch for the electric cable we burried her up and started the next project which had to be finished in a week because our Landscaper Alexander Jach called up to tell us he would be bringing the machines to start the garden on Monday. Armed with a drill, 200 screws and anchors, 40 meters of metal protective strips and some clear silikon we went to work on the metal barrier between the plastic basement covering and the house. This will be an extra moisture barrier between house and basement.

Someday we hope to have a shed in the backyard and maybe even a carport to keep the car happy and protected, but what is a shed and a carport without electricity??  That’s why we decided an electric cable running from the basement to the backyard was in order.  So how do you get a cable at least 80 cms (safe from frost)  under the ground?  You dig.  And that’s just what we did one sunny Sunday afternoon.  Thanks to our neighbor and the two of us digging…

…and a bit of playing…familyaffair

…it only took from 11 am until 7 pm for us to finally finish.  No, we didn’t find any gold or valuables but we did have a nice looking ditch in the back and sideyard where we could put the cable and connect it to the house when we were done.

We talked to our lanscaper Alexander Jach and we should be getting our garden done by the end of September. That means cleaning up the yard of old concrete and trash that the various workers have left behind. No problem, we can do that. After a day’s work we managed to bring 3 car loads of trash to the dump including 700 kilos of concrete. Good thing concrete is the cheapest thing to bring to the dump.

Learning from our mistakes and the incident with the rain in the basement, we’ve since dug deeper canals for the water to be directed away from the house.   Of course the ditches are great for the kids to use as rivers and lakes for their paper boats.    I hope it’s a dry summer, the yard isn’t planned until fall and the blisters on my hands need time to heal.

The torrential rain on Sunday made our house stand in a lake within minutes. Fortunately, Martin was in the basement and saw the porthole in time to avoid the worst.

Bullauge

Without the help of our neighbors, who pumped out the water from the Lichtschacht and dug trenches to keep the water away from the house it could have been much worse.
