Today was yet another day of wet, sticky tile work with few new pictures to show, so instead I thought I would show you the crew of workers we have bustling away in the house at the moment.  You see, up until now it’s worked out fairly well to get at least one picture of every worker who comes through our door, with the exception of the door man but he’s coming back so there’s still hope. Unfortunately, we haven’t shown you the rest of our expert crew so here they are:

Here we have the expert cross spacer puller outer in action.

Here we have another expert tile layer, or soon-to-be expert with all these tiles to practice on.

Let’s not forget yet another budding tiling expert, the girl.

And, of course, here is the happy couple doing what they do best, tiling.

Oh and not to forget the expert tile cutter and all time best tile assistant at work in his natural environment, cutting tiles at the tile cutting machine.

Saturday was the day of the tile.  Martin worked all day to finish the small room.

Kimberly came at 4:00, after grocery shopping for the week and bringing the kids to their Jiu-Jitsu class, to work on the laundry room floor.  Herr Ackermann, is she hired?

Martin and Opa also stayed until late to finish a bit more of the tiles under the stairs.

Sunday should be no different.  Sleep, what’s that when there are tiles to be laid?

Nehmen wir alu-farbenen Leisten, um die Spalten zwischen den Zimmern abzudecke? … oder doch lieber in champagner?

Gefällt uns die Scheuerleiste so wie auf den Bildern oder doch lieber ein paar cm höher?

Martin’s month of vacation is over but there’s still plenty of work to be done, so he was off to the house this morning to continue working.  The basement is only a small portion tiled but at least those in the thresholds are down so the doors can be installed this week.

Just before he started work on the tiles though, he finished the last stretch of the wood floors at the top of the stairs so that this part of the house is as finished as it will be before we move in.

Martin and Wolfram were at it again while Kimberly stayed home sick with bronchitis. This time the tile boys were at work until late in the night.

It was much easier and went much faster putting the wood floors in the bedroom than in the much smaller hallway. The tile boys are coming tomorrow to finish the bathroom floors which meant Martin and Wolfi could only lay half of the floor in the hallway anyway today.  This was probably a good thing, they were working until quite late.

Kimberly went back to work today while Martin and Wolfram started on the Pergo.  First they had to get everything ready, they had to scrape the cement clumps from the floor, sweep the fine shavings from the drywaller, lay and tape together the polyethylene, put the Pergo cutter together and then they could finally get to work.  Right after school Kimberly and the kids came to see what they had accomplished…I mean to finish painting the last two rooms.

The electricians were back at work again and finished cabling the fuse box.  They also installed all the outlets and light switches.

Martin’s vacation is half over 🙁 and this week Kimberly has a week off from school 🙂 so work in the house continues at double speed.
On Saturday we bought, hopefully, the last 50 liters of white paint and 9 different colors for the walls that we had them mix for us at OBI.  Today we painted all the cement outside and carrying walls with one coat of white and the window recesses have been painted with a second coat of white.

While we were busy painting inside the house, the kids were busy playing in the newly fallen snow outside the house.  They managed to make 5 snowmen and get soaking wet but it was well worth it to see their happy faces!!!

Tomorrow morning at 7 the dry wall men should be there to finish working on the rest of the walls.  As soon as they are done it means we are priming and painting those too.  Then we can’t wait to put down this Pergo, our wild pear as seen in its soon-to-be natural environment:

Not much has changed except that the window recesses, the bathroom and a few other walls have a coat of white paint on them.
Well, almost not much. Remember how the bathroom was so nicely tiled except for the floor and part of the shower? Well, there was a bit of a communication problem when the floors where poured which resulted in the the shower floor being poured flat when it was supposed to have a slight incline to let the water run into the drain along the wall. Thanks to our builder, things were put right and after meeting all workers involved the cement floor people came to hammer out the cement in both bathrooms and pour new floors. This time it has a bit more of a slope to it and it will be dry and ready to tile in 48 hours.

We’ve also been dealing with the Pergo problem, which was originally the Pergo decision. This has turned into a major time eater because we just can’t decide what we like. Here are the eight samples we’ve managed to collect over the past few months that have become possiblities.

Plum, walnut, birch, Jatoba Brasil, oak, Mansonian walnut, cherry and another walnut. After discusing it with everyone who came in the house, not one worker was left unscathed, and looking at them all in every light possible we decided to that Jatoba Brasil was the best for us. So off we went to buy enough to cover 3 bedrooms and the hall but when we got there we saw Wildbirne and decided it was even prettier so that’s what we bought. Isn’t that about right?? Curious to see what she looks like? For now, here she is in her natural surroundings. 😉

Today Martin painted the third and last room of the basement which means that the basement is finished except for the tiles.  He didn’t really like the living room ceiling so he decided to paint it one more time.  We, once again, came to pick him up early to try out yet another building store to see if we could find just the right Pergo, time is running out and we really need to find something.  The good thing is that Bauhaus has a great selection of Pergo but the bad news is that we came home with 4 different samples to see just which one we like the best.  Tomorrow we’ll decide which one has made the cut after looking at them in the house in the afternoon light.  I hope we find one, this is just not easy!!
